Worship Notes: REFORMERS rather than REFORMATION
On 31st October many Protestant churches celebrate Reformation Day, remembering Martin Luther’s manifesto posted on his church door on that date, which sparked off the Protestant Reformation.
However, when early in the life of the Uniting Church in Australia the Assembly Commission on Liturgy was considering our church’s calendar, it was felt that we should be remembering not just that 16th century Protestant Reformation but all who had changed the church - earlier reformers, the 18th century evangelicals, the 20th century ecumenists and so many others in the church’s history up to the present day. We can think of our own heritage in people like Davis McCaughey, Alan Walker and all the leaders, theologians, church planners and mission workers who have shaped the church we know today. So in the UCA church calendar, 31st October is listed not as “Reformation Day” but as “Reformers of the Church”. Give thanks to God for Reformers past, present and still to come.
